Asburry Park Update

Updated 10/10/01

A meeting has been scheduled with Chris Hamilton from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 9:00 Am on Tuesday the 23rd of October.  They will initially meet at the NRCS Office, 2514 Sykes Road.  They then will travel to the Asburry Park property to evaluate the site for a "Partners in Wildlife" project.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife has grant money to help develop wetland and nature study areas as a part of their "Partners" program.

Update 9/26/01

Friends of Asburry Park (Joe and Peggy Crisp), along with Allen Makinson, Don Melhoff (NRCS), Hoyt Laney, Columbia Soil and Water Conservation District, a Sanitarian from Land Development Services , and Commissioner Joe Corsiglia  visited the Asburry Park Site.
Allen stated that a portion  of the property should be classified as "Farmed Wetlands".  The land area is composed of an extremely complex combination of wetland depressions and non wetland areas.  His stated the opinion that because of the complexity of the terrain and human manipulation,  it would be next to impossible to do a proper delineation.

He made a number of suggestions and pointed the group to a similar park situation in the Eugene area. A successful park was developed working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  Allen Makinson suggestion that the County and Park Friends, enter into an agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).   The USFWS has a program called "Partners in Wildlife".  As a part of this program they will provide cost assistance to help natural and nature study areas in the best wetland portions, allowing other development to be made in areas with lower quality wetlands.

Commissioner Joe Corsiglia along with Dave Dickens from the North West Oregon RC & D will follow up on this before the end of the week.

The Partners in Wildlife program can open up new doors and provide additional funding for park development.
