The St. Helens Plaza Square
Opinion by Bill Eagle

The above pictures were taken at 4:00 PM on a Wednesday in April.  At that time, there were no on-street parking spots to be found.    On weekends this area is heavily used, and there are times when most of the parking places in the adjoining parking lots are taken.
Many people are divided in their opinions regarding the Courthouse Plaza.  Many feel that change in the historic plaza would be a detriment rather than an enhancement.

It has been suggested by some that instead of changing or denuding the plaza of vegetation,  money would be better spent burying overhead utilities, and upgrading and/or repairing some of the "historic" buildings that front the Plaza and 1st Street..

The Plaza presently serves as a place for people to escape from the sun, and sit on the grass.  It has been part of a summer reading program and community events.

In good weather we see people sitting or just enjoying the shade of the trees.  That is what the Plaza has been used for.  Will it still remain people friendly after "renovation"?  Does the Plaza need "fixing?"… or are we trying to fix something that really isn't broken?

How do you feel about this?  The Plaza belongs to the County.  You should write or telephone your County Commissioners and let them know what you think.  I am sure that they would like your input.

Your Commissioners are: Tony Hyde, Rita Bernhard, and Joe Corsiglia.
