It is disheartening to read about all the foreclosures in the county.

At one time not too many years ago Columbia County was a booming community. We had several huge lumber mills which employed hundreds of people. As the exporting of our raw materials began to increase the mills slowly started to lay people off and then close their doors. We has shoe stores, clothing stores, several tire shops, variety stores, several hardware stores all because we had the jobs to support these businesses. These businesses and labor collectively supported the community.

Unfortunately this is not an isolated story this has happened all over the United States; corporations have closed their doors or moved over seas. These same companies receive taxpayer subsidies and pay no taxes. Of course the cost is passed on to the taxpayers, while the companies are outsourcing our jobs.

The greed of corporations has put the US economy in the toilet and has cost the people in some cases everything they owned. When will the people get fed up enough to demand changes? The problems that face the country will take decades to correct unless we all get pass our petty differences and start working together. But we can make a huge change if we start getting involved in our government. We elect people to represent us and do as the people ask not what the politicians wealthy contributors ask.

The next time there is a public meeting on a given subject get up off your duff and attend the meeting, learn  what is going on and maybe make a comment or two, write a letter to the editor and support the issue or not support the issue just do something.

It is time people remember the reason we live in a democracy, it's not because someone sat on their duff and did nothing. Or gave their life to make sure freedom rang. It is time that you do your part to continue to ensure that our democracy is there for future generations.

Let's demand that those in power bring jobs back to America now, or they will be out of a job.
