Chemical Weapons

By Tammy Maygra

President Bashar al-Assad’s government has used chemical weapons on innocent people suffocating dozens. The attack struck the rebel-held suburb of Douma. Rescue workers found at least 42 people dead in their homes, including children-- dying from apparent suffocation and having white foam coming from their mouths and noses. The fortunate survivors were rushed to the hospital with breathing problems and burning eyes. The dead bodies could not be evacuated because of the strong order and lack of proper breathing equipment.

The attack give the impression that it broke the will of Douma’s rebels, who then agreed to an agreement with the government to hand the area over and be bused to another area outside government control in the country’s north. Thousands of fighters and tens of thousands of their relatives are expected to leave Douma. There has been a civil war going on in Syria for the last 7 years.

Russia and Tehran dismissed the allegations of a chemical attack, calling the report false. Both Russia and Tehran support President Bashar al-Assad. The United staes and Europe condemned the action of the chemical attack.

The Syrian Civil Defense and the Syrian American Medical Society, which supports clinics in opposition areas of Syria, documented that more than 500 people had gone to medical centers after the assault with symptoms symptomatic of exposure to a chemical agent. Those symptoms included trouble breathing, foaming at the mouth, burning eyes and the emission of a chlorine-like odor.

The United States called on Russia to end this complete support immediately and work with the international community to prevent further, barbaric chemical weapons attacks. But calling on Russia is useless because they are behind the attack and completely denies any use of chemical weapons.

Bahram Qasemi, the spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the bogus reports of chemical usage is just an excuse by the United States and Western countries to take military action against Damascus.

President Obama failed to respond with militarily action when a chemical attack by the Syrian government in 2013 killed more than 1,400 people near Damascus, according to a United States calculation. Instead the United States and Russia reached an agreement to have Syria surrender its chemical weapons stockpiles and dismantle its capabilities to make new ones. The agreement was notable at the time, but multiple chemical attacks since then, have been blamed on the Syrian government, raising questions about how effective the agreement was.

Now we have President Trump who is in the same pickle President Obama was in. We know the UN will do nothing like usual, they might write a resolution condemning the action. Like that is going to do a damn thing. The US may call an air strike, like they did last year in April, the US fired cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase after a Sarin nerve agent attack on the opposition-held town of Khan Sheikhoun killed more than 80 people. International investigators held the Syrian government responsible.

IS THIS THE NEW COLD WAR? The intensification of tension comes as relations between Russia and the West have plunged to their worst level in decades, following the poisoning in March of an ex-spy in England that the UK blamed on Moscow, and alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

As the U.S. discussed a Syria pullout, the sensible action for Assad would have been to lay low. He obviously didn't, and now the next move is up to President Trump. Trump said that the US would get to the bottom of exactly who was involved in this horrific incident and the US would not stand by and allow this kind of actions to take place. And that Assad and his allies will pay a heavy price for what they have done.

Although missile attacks from the US destroying air bases and Israel lunching missiles and destroying chemical weapon factories have not deterred these crazy individuals from murdering innocent people or launching the chemical weapons.

President Trump said that this barbaric act is a crime against humanity. And he will make a decision in the next 24-48 hours of what he is going to do.

Some people think Trump will attack Syria to take the heat off his presidency and its problems with the FBI and the Justice Department. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens on both accounts
