Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a desert country encompassing most of the Arabian Peninsula, with Red Sea and Persian (Arabian) Gulf coastlines . The royal family dominates al. The King is the head of state, the Prime Minister, and the Supreme Commander. He combines legislative, executive, and judicial functions. Royal decrees have the power to overrule any judicial or administrative decision.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman seeks to modernize the petro-state, by pushing for the ability for women to be able to drive, he also pushed for allowing re-opening of public cinemas for the first time since the 1980s, the lifting of a ban on music concerts and plans to allow women into sports stadiums. These things were objected to and fought by the conservative religious “men’s faction of religious government.

Yet even with these small  but large gains women in Saudi Aribia still have a long road ahead of them to be free women. Right now women are under several restrictions which are, All women in the kingdom are considered to have a male “wali” – an official guardian, typically a father, brother, uncle or husband. Women need their guardian’s permission for any major activity, including travel, obtaining a passport, getting married or divorced and signing contracts.

The system makes it difficult for victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse to obtain legal help because the police often insist that women and girls obtain their guardian's consent to file a complaint - even when the grievance is against the guardian. A law was passed in 2017 which stated  women did not need consent from their male guardian for some activities, including entering university, taking a job and undergoing surgery.

The dress code for women is governed by a strict interpretation of Islamic law and is enforced to varying degrees across the country. Their faces need not be covered but the religious hard liners are not happy with this rule. The religious police harass women for exposing what they consider to be too much flesh or wearing too much make-up. The religious fanatics do not want women to wear any color or any decorations.

The majority of public buildings, including offices, banks and universities, have separate entrances for the different sexes, they want to limit the time a woman spends with males. Must not be able to trust the men I would say. Women are not allowed to use a swimming pool with men either.

More unusual restrictions on women’s lives include entering a cemetery and reading an uncensored fashion magazine, they cannot try on clothes in a closed dressing room at a department store either. Women were allowed to complete in the Olympics in 2015 they were deemed prostitutes, yet the Young Crown Prince is trying to change a few things so tourists will come to a more modern Saudi Aribia.

Yet with Positive changes slowly being made Saudi Arabia did this….

Dissident Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi went missing four days ago after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where Turkish officials now say they believed he was killed inside the consulate.  This was a premeditated murder by the Saudi’s,  secretly moving his body. Khashoggi, who has lived in self-imposed banishment in Washington for the past year fearing revenge for his condemnation of Saudi policies, seems now to have been a smart move on this mans part. But the Saudis got him anyway.

A Turkish security source said that a group of 15 Saudi nationals, including some officials, had arrived in Istanbul in two planes and entered the consulate on the same day Khashoggi was there, and later left the country.  Turkish source said Turkish officials were trying to identify them. Turkey's Anadolu news agency also reported that the group of Saudis were briefly at the consulate. Qu incidence ?

The consulate was equipped with cameras but they did not record footage, so no images could be retrieved of Khashoggi entering or leaving the consulate, which is ringed by police barriers and has high security fences topped with barbed wire.  How odd is that? Someone is lying….

But now the journalist’s death may have been recorded on his very own watch and sent out. The investigation continues.

It is sad but clear that the Saudis still is a country of oppression and deceit. Its actions does not make it much of a tourists attraction.  Even if the Crown prince tries to improve his country and move it into the 21st century it will take generations for Saudi Arabia to become entirely modern. Because the ignorance which drives the country by men, will be passed down and down to the next generation of men being brain washed . It is a never ending cycle because these cultures like to control women and treat them as less than humans, and have been for thousands of years, it will take at least half that long for this country to really become a modern free thin king and living country.
