THE OCEAN CLEANUP PROJECT

UPDATE::::: Ten years since its founding in 2013, The Ocean Cleanup project remains determined. Founder and CEO Boyan Slat says a recent $25 million donation to the effort, the largest single contribution to date, makes 2023 the most important year yet for the international nonprofit.

The Ocean Cleanup plans to use the donation from Airbnb cofounder Joe Gebbia to support the launch later this year of System 03, the largest iteration of its ocean cleaning system, targeting a Great Pacific Garbage Patch that covers an area twice as big as Texas. Size does matter when it comes to ocean cleanup systems,” says Slat, whose organization is based in The Netherlands.

System 03 will be 2,400 meters wide, or 7874 feet. Three times of the size of System 02, a floating barrier that captures plastic as it’s towed through the water by ships. The garbage patch, located between Hawaii and California, consists of up to 100 million kilograms of plastic. System 02, deployed in late 2021, has removed about 440,000 pounds so far or 220 tons. That’s a lot of plastic.. System 03 will be the blueprint for scaling toward a fleet of barriers, with a goal of removing 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040. The latest System 03 is slated to deploy around early July 2023.

The Ocean Cleanup also has Interceptor systems in 11 rivers, to capture plastic before it reaches the ocean. Those include Los Angeles County in California and Kingston, Jamaica. Existing Interceptors have captured more than 2 million kilograms of plastic since 2019. The Ocean Cleanup plans to increase the total to 20 Interceptors this year, including one targeting trash tsunamis in Guatemala, starting in May. To solve our plastic problem we must go everywhere and where much of it starts.

Depending on the location, plastic collected by the ocean system and Interceptors is recycled, used in waste-to-energy projects or buried in a landfill. The automaker Kia is integrating collected ocean plastic into the design of its vehicles. A good attempt to recycle the recyclables!.

The Ocean Cleanup technology has been proven in the ocean and in rivers. But the company wants further improvements, including driving down costs and increasing efficiency.

Purely by size, System 03 could collect three times the plastic as the 800-meter barrier that’s been used,  But there are two other variables: downtime for extracting the plastic that’s collected and how well the system can be steered to target hot spots in the patch. Both things are being looked at to improve.

The $25 million donation will cover part of The Ocean Cleanup’s 2023 budget, which was about $52 million in 2022, according to an annual report. The Coca-Cola Co. helped support The Ocean Cleanup’s first river project.

We don’t hear much about this kid and his efforts to clean up the pollution thrown into our oceans, rivers and other waters. He is doing a good job and should be rewarded with recognition. Our government should throw 25 million to him to help with his efforts. Because we all benefit.

Then the government should fund the technology to make safe biodegradable plastics that if ingested by animals they can digest them like regular food. We can do without the convenience of plastics. Or make all plastic recyclable, it goes all in one bin to be reused. Outlaw plastic water bottles, I personally hate them, why do people buy water at $10 a gallon just stupid. Invest in a stainless bottle and reuse it for ever. How hard is it to fill it up at home. I have a gallon jug and a refillable bottle. its simple to do.
