The Most Lethal Warship to Ever Be Built
President Donald Trump has announced the construction of two new "Trump-class" battleships that would be the first in a "Golden Fleet" of Navy ships in the latest instance of Trump naming things after himself. Each one of these will be the largest battleship in the history of our country, the largest in the history of the world," Trump said, flanked by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Dec. 22. Three pictures of ships labeled with the name "USS Defiant" stood behind him. Trump said "20 to 25" ships eventually would make up the new class of ships. Construction of the first two ships would begin "immediately, The ships would be equipped with hypersonic weapons, lasers, cruise missiles and nuclear weapons, Trump said. Artificial intelligence would also play a "big factor" in the ships' capabilities. The Navy will lead construction of the ships, along with the president, who called himself "a very aesthetic person. Trump has criticized U.S. warships since his first term as "terrible-looking" and pressed to revamp the fleet. The Trump-class ships will upgrade Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers – named after a World War II and Korean War-era admiral. The class was commissioned in 1991 and is still in production. The construction of a new frigate class as part of the "golden fleet." The Navy aims to "launch the first hull in the water in 2028. The new class of ships will be heavier than current Navy destroyers America’s next battleship, the USS Defiant, will be part of a new class of large surface combatants with the most destructive fire power of any surface ship to ever sail — having the ability to strike an adversary at 100x the range of the previous class. The Trump-class Battleship will be the first-ever guided missile battleship with the ability to deploy with nuclear and hypersonic missiles. This modern Battleship will leverage state-of-the-art combat systems, including large missile vertical launch systems (LMVLS) to deliver long range hypersonic strike against strategic targets ashore that are unreachable by the current fleet and directed energy weapons to deliver more favorable exchange ratios against enemy threats. The Battleship will be capable of operating independently, as part of a Carrier Strike Group, or commanding its own Surface Action Group depending on the mission and threat environment. With the ability to provide forward command and control for both manned and unmanned platforms, Battleship will be a critical component in executing the Navy Warfighting Concept.
